Obviously, the destination will dictate what you need. And the more civilized the destination you go to, the less you have to bring, because you can always buy what you need.
In some places (especially the new places we visit), I'll bring enough (eg: formula/diapers etc) for the whole holiday just so I don't have to waste time looking for a place to stock up on those things.
Medications:
I tend to pack enough medication for least to last one day & night because I don't want to have to run out in the middle of the night in a strange country to get fever medication. Little travel bottles are handy for putting small quantities of medication so you don't have to lug around big glass bottles.
Daiso sells little sauces bottles which are perfect for this. I keep a pack of basic medications (eg: Fever / Cough / Cold ) in small bottles for travelling so it's always ready when we need it.
